As a website development company and WordPress support provider one of the first questions we ask potential customers and business owners is if their website is built with WordPress or another website building software. As a business owner it is important to know how your website is built, where it is hosted and if you are getting the most out of your current service. Unfortunately, most owners don’t know or remember how their website is built or where it is hosted. Do you know if your website is built using WordPress? If you want to find keep reading and we will walk you through our how to tell if a site is WordPress steps below.
3 steps on How to Tell if your website is built using WordPress in Chrome
Step 1: Open your website in Chrome
This step is very basic and straight forward. Open your website using chrome on your desktop or laptop. Wait for the website to load.
Step 2: Open Chrome Developer Tools
Once your website is loaded Right click anywhere on the page which will open a drop-down menu. At the end of the menu click the Inspect button or click CTRL + SHIFT + i. This will open up a new set of options on the right-hand side of you chrome screen with your website’s html code. This html code has some hints if your website is built with WordPress but there is an easier way to see if your website is built with WordPress.
Step 3: Switch to Sources Tab and Look for wp-content and wp-includes
In the developer tools section on the top right of the screen you will see some tab options like elements, console, sources and network. Click Sources. This will change your view slightly and show your websites Pages and systems. Look for your websites URL. In our case we look for branchingsoftware.com as that is Branching Software’s domain name. If it isn’t expanded click the arrow next to your url. This will expand the information for your webpage. Once expanded look for the following 2 files:
Wp-content
Wp-includes/js
If your website file contains these two files it is built using WordPress software. There are other options on how to know if your website is WordPress or not but this is an easy and free option that anyone can use on any computer that has chrome installed with a working internet connection.
